The L-word(s)

Monday, 1 December 2008

I saw this on Keely's blog and thought I'd throw my hat into the ring.

The rules: You leave a comment on this post, and I’ll assign you a letter. You write about ten things you love that begin with your assigned letter, and post it at your place. When people comment on your list, you give them a letter, and the chain continues on.

My letter, assigned by Keely, is 'L'. So here goes. I love:

1. Laughing. It's a sign of good life, good health, good vibes, and good will, and I've been doing a lot of it lately.

2. Luscious Jackson. Their album Fever in Fever Out is a staple for me during the holidays, when I'm not listening to Christmas music.

3. Links!

4. What would a love list of mine be without food? Linguine, lobster, and anything Lyonnaise, please.

5. I love lamp.

6. My library. We converted a second kitchen into this room, using the cabinets as book shelves.

7. Lloyd Dobler

8. Leaves, as in taking photos of them:

9. Loyalty.

10. Life.

Breakworking

Monday, 24 November 2008

I had a very positive breakfast date with my friend Erica today - it really set the day in motion on a productive note. Over breakfast sandwiches from a funky new place near her downtown office, we talked about personal saving tricks, reflected on needs and opportunities in the future, and swapped ideas on different writing projects we're each mulling. Erica is planning a translation of several Italian stories and memoirs from the 1800s and 1900s, and I have my usual unruly number of book ideas rattling around in my head.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little conversation with a cerebral buddy to make you feel inspired and on track.

So it's been a little spotty over here post-wise, but it's not for a complete lack of blogging. Rather, I've been posting a lot at the 'save money, stay hip' blog, Budge, and at TSB, where we just unveiled our latest featured blogger.

The Third Annual Scorpion Bowl Networking Bash

Sunday, 9 November 2008

Last night we attended one of my favorite parties of the year - The Scorpion Bowl, a bash sponsored by Positronic Design that is one part house party, one part birthday party, and one part networking event, rolled into one night and festooned with yards of Christmas lights.

My friend Dave, Positronic's owner, throws this party every year on or around his birthday, which coincides with mine and that of a lot of other Creatives in the area. Celebrating 'all things Scorpio,' Dave has kegs of Paper City brew wheeled in, catered food from a famous Polish deli - Gramps - delivered, and musicians hired to play throughout the night in various parts of Positronic headquarters. The business is actually an old Victorian house recognizeable from the street by its large veggie garden and year-round party lights, draped on the porch, in the windows, on the piano, around the grill, and anywhere else there's an outlet.

The usual familiar faces were there, drinking beer from pre-printed Scorpion Bowl party cups and hanging by the doorway of the root cellar to hear the band. A few friends and colleagues who had yet to come to the party before showed their faces, too, including Max and Paul, and I met some new, interesting people like Jenny, a Francis Perkins student at Mount Holyoke College who is studying the Art Nouveau movement.

It's the unexpected wunderkinds you meet that make the Scorpion Bowl a great time, as well as an effective networking vehicle. So many people think there's this complicated science to networking ... not so much. A party house filled with open minds is all it takes.

Because I needed a new hole in the head, I started a new blog - Budge, dedicated to publishing budget tips for those of us who want to save money and stay hip. I'm accepting tips and ideas at writerjax at gmail dot com, so feel free to send me your interesting coin-saving trick. If it's cool and hasn't been used yet ( and right now, let's just say your chances are great), I'll post it along with a link to your Web site or blog, if you want.

Here's to the cash.
