Today, I got started on weeding old stuff out of the refrigerator, tackling some crammed drawers in the office, and starting an overall clean on the living room. I also organized my crafting/scrapping stuff in a three-drawer plastic bin tower, and that seriously cut down on the little bits and baubles that were starting to overtake the coffee table.

Organizing highlight of the day: I found my grandmother's crocheted runner, given to me recently by my aunt Mimi. Kilimanjaro for an educational documentary project.

It's been a long, strange trip already...about 10 months ago, he first learned that this gig was a possibility. I listened to his excitement with a grain of salt, and moved on with the dishes, laundry, and invoicing that dominated the week. As a filmmaker and writer respectively, we both get to do some cool things for our jobs, but we also get a lot of 'doinks' - trips that are presented and eventually fall flat for a variety of reasons: no funding, no time, not enough interest, too much interest, etc. I, for instance, have been bumped from a trip to Fiji, a trip to Nepal, and a ride in the Zero G plane. But I have gone snowmobiling on the Lewis and Clark Trail, ridden trains and ferries around Europe, and hung out with a bunch of stoner-geeks in Kentucky, all in the name of journalism.

About a month later, the trip started to look more solid, and wheels started to turn, so to speak. The biggest sign of 'OMG, I think he's really going to do this' came on Thanksgiving morning, when Mark had his last cigarette after years of smoking. He never faltered, never looked back, never cheated, and was surprisingly bearable during the first few weeks as a non-smoker.

Then, the training started - to get in shape, he had to complete a certain amount of miles walked or hiked each week, plus cardio and strength training. But the other wrinkle was training to use - and carry - a 40-pound RED camera. I tagged along for a lot of these missions well into April, when they suddenly stopped.

We had a bad day. Due in part to the physical training, a hernia Mark already had worsened, and he had surgery to patch not one but three holes in his gullet. While in recovery, his doctor came out to tell me he didn't think Mark was going to be able to make the trip to Africa - and could I please let him know?

Stomp all over my husband's dream immediately following surgery? Great. Under normal circumstances, this would stink. But what made it surreal and awful was the phone call I'd gotten an hour earlier, with news that my mother-in-law had been airlifted to a hospital in Tampa following a stroke. Mark's mom, June, who was well-known in our city as the manager of a downtown deli for many years, passed away a few days later. Over the course of 24 hours, I had to tell my husband the worst news I've ever had to tell anyone, and then add insult to injury by informing him that Kili was looking a lot farther away than ever before. It was a rough month for both of us.

Mark didn't take to the Kili news right away though - he was still convinced that he could heal in time to get back to training. I wasn't as sure, but a few weeks later, there he was climbing the Seven Sisters Range, Mt. Tom, and Mt. Monadnock. There was another blip on the radar when some funding for the expedition fell through, only to be restored a week later. At that point, I decided that fate had stepped in and taken the wheel. Nothing was going to stop him from going on this trip, and frankly, had the situation been reversed (and it may soon be) and he was the one to tell me he'd rather I not chase my destiny, his words would fall on deaf ears. I know that. He knows that. We're both stubborn donkeys.

Instead, I put the Spin Machine into high-gear (quel surprise, I'm the company's publicist). If he's going to go, I thought, I might as well get some sweet press out of it. The response has been amazing - one national, one regional, and several local publications and outlets picked up the piece: Man climbs African Mountain with Giant Camera for Educational Film.

The professional goals Mark will achieve as part of this trip are countless, and include the chance to shoot amazing footage and make some international connections. But I've written enough articles, releases, and blog entries about those things. With less than 24-hours until he flies off into the wild blue yonder, I think I am ready to hang up my PR cap for a minute and just be a wife.

Dear B~

I am so proud of you! You've done so much to get to this point, including put up with a nag from time to time. I know you will fulfill your fantasy of playing drums in Africa - you've already built a drum bike and played it in the desert, so why not?

I will be with you every step of the way, and so will your mom and everyone else who loves you. I am so lucky to have a wunderkind like you.

Now, get packing. I have bookcases to organize and a kitchen to paint. In the words of George Eliot, 'It's never too late to be what you might have been.'

Leave Comment

Change for Iran!

"To the Iranian government hackers who keep attacking the places they see as a threat, you are wasting your time. Good times never seemed so good.

This weekend was very Tweety in my neck of the woods, too. It started with what was the best WMTweetUp yet, held this month at the Apollo Grill - a funky eatery with a massive collection of salt and pepper shakers, among other cool things. It's located in Eastworks, an equally cool retrofitted mill building. For those not yet in the know, a TweetUp is a meet-up, consisting of folks who use Twitter. The WMTweetUps are all located in Western Mass., and these uber-awesome networking events exist entirely because this guy, we'll call him Jason, makes it happen. One staffer wore a 'tweet-themed' skirt in our honor, and somehow procured some blue marshmallow Peeps that are more reminiscent than I realized of the Twitter Bird.

They even put a special beer on tap as a WMTU special, and Jason supplied our very own tap handle for the occasion. That was a first for me, and I'm totally looking forward to further grilled-fruit experiences. By this point we all had Twitter on the brain). Even iTunes cooperated; I took the risk of putting my entire collection on shuffle, so you never know what you're going to get. A few Christmas songs snuck through, but we just sang along and made merry. And when my recordings of 1960s musicals like Godspell came around, I actually had some fellow fans in the house. Our bitter rival - as bitter as it can get between two schools with a cumulative headcount of 800 students - was Nauset High School, one town over. We were not the most creative of rivals, either - our taunts at basketball games were limited to dragging out the word 'Nauset' over 10 seconds: Naaaaauusssset...YOU SUCK!

A few years ago, I learned from a boy I used to babysit that this chant has not changed. So much for the future of today's youth.

I was reminded of Nauset and of high school a few times this weekend, though, as well as of a couple of other fertile memories from days gone by on Old Cape Cod. Back on the peninsula for the weekend, ArcherVision and I first made a trek out to Nauset Beach in Orleans and Wychmere Harbor in Harwich, to shoot some footage with Del Padre Digital's new RED camera and test a camera bag for Studio Monthly magazine. AVision did the shooting and wrote the review; I schlepped the bag and took the photos. Here's one I'm relatively sure they won't use:

We made a few stops at some favorite spots, too - the Yard Arm for lunch, the Clothes Den for deals, and the 400 for dinner. Then, it was on to a benefit concert for a high school friend of mine who passed away in February. Some local musicians joined forces to raise funds for her 11-year-old son, and it was nice that something positive could come out of a dark moment.

Those of you who've read The Jump for a while, or who've read the About section, or who just know me a little in general, know that I'm a musician who actively paid for rent and college as a singer and violinist in the nineties - a time when the Cape Cod music scene was rockin'. As such, I have a lot of friends from this period in my life, too (the twenties, oh how quickly they raced by). That said, there was quite a mash-up of people from the past at the benefit. High school friends, music friends, people whose kids I used to babysit for, those kids (some taller than me now), and plenty of people I spent long nights with after gigs, talking, laughing, and making mischief.

The thing is, I left the Cape more than a decade ago, and I haven't seen a lot of these people since, if not longer. Plus, Facebook negates all of those basic questions people used to ask - what you do, where you live...it's all there on your profile page, so the result is a sort of awkward groping for new topics to discuss with people whose lives, like mine, are completely different now.

But the point is, I have been gone so long that I definitely had a feeling of 'you can't go home again' that was bittersweet. On one hand, I am glad that I'm not 19 anymore. I was skinny, but I was also, well, 19. On the other hand, in many ways these were the best days of my life, so far. And on a third, proverbial hand, I also felt a little like it was impossible for some of my old friends to even understand where I've been, what I've done, and who I've become. Granted, I've still got a long way to go, but I'm certainly not 19 anymore.

As I've had a week to think about it in between events and meetings, I have come to the conclusion that this is one of those times that gives the Sieve of Life a little shake. Some people fall through and disappear into the silt. Others emerge after being hidden away, little golden nuggets. And I'm kneeling by the river, watching it all go by.

That rival chant at the Harwich-Nauset basketball games, though, I don't know what that is. Maybe it's an annoying pebble that gets stuck in the sifter. Or, if you're sick of that metaphor, maybe it's just one of those things about the Cape that I should learn to love - because it's one thing that hasn't changed.

1998:

2008:

"Sometimes the lights are shining on me - and other times, I can barely see. More and more people are signing on to the World 2.0 revolution, and the more, the merrier.

It can be hard to avoid that 'I've been here for a year and a half' mentality when people - but more often, businesses - make rookie mistakes. I'm not one to chime in and make people feel dumb for making an honest, learning-the-ropes gaff - on the contrary, the more mistakes people make, the quicker they will learn. But the surge in the Zeitgeist makes these errors more visible, en masse.

Take for instance the NBC affiliate in my area, which is probably making the greatest, quickest strides in terms of social media among all of the regional news outlets. They're doing everything right, just about - conversing instead of advertising, releasing relevant information at relevant times, and following other businesses as well as competitors and individuals. In short, I think they get it.

Nevertheless, some local Tweeps still schooled them in 4.5 seconds flat when the station used the hashtag #wmtu to refer to Western Massachusetts. (it actually refers specifically to Western Mass. TweetUp events.)

No worries - while this underscores that there is a definite etiquette to be considered, and plenty of gatekeepers making sure this happens, it was a small goof that illustrated the station's understanding of region-centric hashtags. Hell, of hashtags all together.

In the spirit of collaboration, here are a few small tips for new Tweeps. And by the way, glad to have you.

- Talk! Ask questions! Answer questions! Share cool article links, and even the occasional joke. But don't just Tweet links to your next costly event. It's boring, and the Zeitgeist does not like to be solicited.

- Follow. Find Tweeps you want to hear more from, and feel free to jump right in and be one of their newest fans. Chances are, if you have something interesting to say, they'll follow you, too.

- Another note on hashtags - these are keywords that you draw attention to (for the sake of the reader as well as the search engines) by preceding them with a hashtag, or pound sign: #. Each day, you'll notice a list of 'trending topics' on Twitter's right sidebar. These are usually the result of many people using hashtags in their Tweets, so the terms might refer to a little Twitter game (what's your favorite #StarWars character?), a daily news item (#earthquakes continue in China!), or a pop culture reference (#Oprah). Hashtags are a great way to find Tweeps in your general area too, be it professional, geographic, or otherwise. Some examples from my neck of the woods include #wmtu (Western Mass. TweetUps), #pcwm (PodCamp Western Mass, the best social media event from Boston to NYC), #westernma (refers to anything happening in the area), and #TwitterQueens (a very cool network for girl-Tweeps, with strong ties to Massachusetts).

Leave Comment

Just an interlude...

I like what ERC5 has done here - they held a wine tasting fundraiser that, sadly, I had to miss. And on Sunday, May 17, scores of these artists will join with the community at large to celebrate the life of Rosalie Muce, and to raise funds for a trust for her son, Keahlan Mullen.

Muce, a native of Harwich and 1994 graduate of Harwich High School, was killed in a car crash on February 27 in Falmouth, Maine. She was a hospice nurse who championed community-based care, and volunteered frequently for the eHope Foundation. Muce also received the Women's Opportunity Award from Soroptimist International in 2003 for her community service efforts.

On May 17 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., a benefit concert and silent auction has been planned at the Eastham Elks Club on McKoy Road in Eastham.

“We’re going to try to raise some money for Kealahn's future,” said Michael Pandiscio, a coordinator of the event. “We thought we would do something nice; something good in such a bad situation.”

Several local businesses have already donated items and services to the silent auction, and additional donations can be made by e-mailing carefactor@comcast.net, or calling 508.432.6675.

Music will be provided by local favorites Care Factor Zero, with special guests and former founding members Nick Muce and Tim Taylor, and by Big Rhythm Wine – A Grateful Dead Experience. And that leads us to what you can do now. The success of the project depends on getting hundreds of thousands of images. Each one represents your tiny block of our life on earth."

My contribution to Earth Mosaic 2009 ...

It's Wednesday. Most of the day has been spent at home, as my husband recovers from surgery and we simultaneously field a second family issue. The weather is rainy, cold, and raw.

I bought this dress at a small boutique on Cape Cod over the Thanksgiving holiday, and with the cold weather persisting, I have yet to wear it. Today, it caught the gray light in its sleeves and cast a soft, emerald glow as it hung by the window.

In the bathroom, I look in the mirror at the circles under my eyes, then realize we've yet to paint the trim around the door for the eleventh month in a row. It's more of an observation than it is another woe.

Still floating through the house, I light the candle on the oven. It lends warmth to an otherwise stagnant day.

This is the kind of day that makes me notice small things, like the book of vintage photos we keep in the living room. We flip the pages occasionally, to reveal a baby in a bassinette, a snapshot from a boat of a stormy sea, or a stoic family portrait like this one. We don't know who these people are - and somehow, that's comforting.

On the three-season porch, I can't appreciate the raindrops falling on the roof, and splattering through the screens. Across the street, I see cars rushing through puddles and street lights obscured by water and fog. My camera sees much the same thing.

As I'm wandering through the house cooking dinner, administering ice packs and medications, and fielding phone calls from family members, I pop a cup of tea into the microwave for reheating. On top, the cucumber seeds I planted yesterday are already sprouting tall in their clay pot. It's amazing how fast life begins.

Leave Comment

Related Entries:

The Horror! Who loses?"

I immediately got a response from a Tweep - "That happens every day!" And, I agree. The nuances of my quandary were lost in the brevity of 140 characters... but what I was getting at is this: Does anyone win in this scenario? I think the answer is no. The person with the 'tude is losing business. The person with the issue may go to another vendor with a better outlook on life, but who may not offer the same product or level of service. The next step intrinsically becomes a gamble.

And yet, backing out of a venture because a potential partner is being an knob is probably the best reason to back out at all. If your gut says run, I say kick off those high-heeled shoes, sistah. Whenever I've ignored that little voice in my own head, I've lived to realize it was right all along.

Even with the clarity of my opinions on this one, the scenario still ticks me off to no end. We are in an economic crisis. Why are people who never learned the importance of customer service (who are working with customers) even employed right now?! Choosing to avoid the jerks of the world used to be just that, a choice. Now, it's less of a choice, and more of a hurdle. Avoiding certain relationships is easier in a robust economy, and whether a professional chooses to weather that bad attitude in the name of moving business forward, or to forgo the partnership and miss out on any number of opportunities (better relationships with other people in the company, a visible or lucrative client, new channels of business, etc.), it's easy for a bad taste to develop.

To me, being nasty is just one simple way the less learned of us can contribute to our social and financial woes. It bothers me when people like this win battles. But all is fair in love and war, and I love a good fight. My favorite killing machine, however, is kindness.

Want more good vibes? Case and point: yesterday, I was working on a surprise project with a tight deadline, and had to reschedule a phone interview for an article. No biggie, but the PR contact seemed a bit put-out. In retrospect, now I understand that because she had no idea I was working as a subcontractor for another company that day, she could not have known said project had to take precedence over my interview - which I never should have tried to squeeze in anyway. To her, it probably seemed like a blow-off. Lesson learned.

I'm working diligently at getting myself into a more normal routine to avoid pitfalls like these, while at the same time, taking advantage of certain freedoms I now have. For one, I have worn jeans to work just about every day since November. Now that spring is finally coming, I am ready to switch to skirts, but it's nice that the choice doesn't need to be made out of necessity.

One thing I've tried with some success is imposing a dedicated, eight-hour schedule on myself, no matter where I'm working. If it's an at-home writing day, I've adopted an '11 to 7' schedule, allowing for housework or downtime in the morning and in the evening, while still hitting those key business hours for phone calls. This was my favorite shift back in the day when I worked in retail - I could sleep in and still party with my friends after work. Now, it's more effective in forcing me to stop work at 7 pm (or 8), and focus on other things that tend to fall by the wayside, including laundry, dishes, bill paying, and eating.

What little tricks do you have for staying on task and organized?

Leave Comment

Related Entries:

Blue Canyon Chefs Present

Writer in the Storm

Ze Story on France?
