I'd Like to Thank iParty ...

posted Sunday, 24 February 2008
It's Oscar Night! For me, that means two things: I'm looking forward to hours of snarky Red Carpet television and an excuse to eat snacks, and I'm also reflecting on my annual Oscar party, held last night.

Hard to believe, but at my 'advanced age' (I kid) I've already hosted 11 Oscar parties, beginning in college.

Here's the history of the festivities: Guests are asked to bring an Oscar-themed food or beverage to share and to be judged in one of four categories - Best Name, Best Tasting, Most Creative, and The Connelly (Best Supporting Performance). I give out little awards - these were last year's:

The dish can refer to anything Oscar -related (this year's nominees, the Red Carpet, the statuette, famous Oscar moments or speeches, etc.). I, now 'we', supply beer, wine, and soft drinks, as well as nomination forms and other goodies to enjoy. I used to have this party on the night of the Oscars, but who wants to party on a Sunday anymore?

Still, the food competition has always been a big part, and keeps things interesting regardless of the timing. We used to call the party the Saucecars, and while some veterans still do, it has caused confusion.

In recent years, entries have included Eternal Sunshine of the Fruitless Rind, It's Hard Out Here for a Shrimp, Quiche-a Castle Hughes, Wok the Line, Felicity Stuffed-man, Charlie and the Chocolate Martini, You Like Meat, You Really, Really Like Meat!, Lord of the Taco Rings, The Constant Garden Salad, The Deviled Egg Wears Paprika, and Black Forest-Whitaker Cheesecake.

This was a hard year for movie-themed dishes; you really have to marinate for a long while to come up with a food or drink inspired by 'Michael Clayton.'

But our guests worked wonders, like they always do, and it was a nice year overall for this annual bash. All recurring parties have their ups and downs, but this one welcomed just the right amount of people, who got into the spirit by holding impromptu trivia contests and taste-testing each and every culinary creation before casting their votes.

That said, The Saucecars Went To:

Best Tasting: No Country Fried Chicken for Old Men - Justine

Best Name: Prawn Baby Prawn - Toro and Gina

Most Creative: Atonemint - Mark

The Connelly: Atunament - Shawn and Jeanne

And here are a few more of my personal favorites:
Cake Blanchette and Golden Age Icing

The 3:10 to Yummo

La Meat En Rose with Edith Pilaf

Wow, your Oscar parties are far more creative than mine! I was trying to figure out how many years we've been having one...probably about 11 as well. It's always a good time though and being hostess means I get to skip watching most of the show (YAWN!) Ha!

These are great! Probably not a bad thing, either, that we didn't bring meatballs, too :) I think my favorites are "Atunament" and "La meat en Rose with Edith Pilaf" - both very clever! Looks like you had a great party, such a shame that we had to miss it!
